Channahon, IL – The Forest Preserve District of Will County is set to host a unique educational event, Mammal Madness, at Four Rivers Environmental Education Center in Channahon, Illinois.
Scheduled for Saturday, March 2, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., this family-friendly and free event invites the public to learn about various mammals, including some native to Will County. According to event organizers, the highlight includes two live animal presentations by Big Run Wolf Ranch at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., featuring a Canada lynx, porcupine, skunk, and opossum.
In addition to the live presentations, attendees will enjoy a range of mammal-themed activities, such as creating animal masks and matching games. The Forest Preserve is enhancing this year’s event to provide more in-depth information and fun activities compared to previous years. Alexis Lyons, an interpretive naturalist at Four Rivers, emphasizes the goal of building stronger connections between visitors and local wildlife.
Mammal Madness aims to celebrate and educate about the diverse mammal species in Will County, including some that are less known. Jess McQuown, a program manager, highlights the importance of recognizing our connection with wildlife, mentioning species like the 13-lined ground squirrel, the least weasel, and the bobcat, which are often unnoticed by residents.
The event will also feature an expanded Mammalypics station, interactive games, a self-guided hike, and a craft area for making animal masks. An outdoor s’mores station will add to the fun, while supplies last. The Mammal Madness event is supported by funding from Alliance Pipeline and The Nature Foundation of Will County, aiming to bring the community closer to the natural world.
