Kankakee County, IL – A dramatic police pursuit through Kankakee and Will counties, involving a stolen SUV from University Park, resulted in several collisions, a high school lockdown, and the arrest of a Chicago man. The chase started after agents from the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force located the stolen vehicle at a Momence residence. As agents approached, the driver, identified as 25-year-old Brice A. Mixon of Chicago, rammed an agent’s vehicle and initiated a high-speed escape.
Mixon’s desperate attempt to evade capture led him through several towns, onto Route 17 and Interstate 57, causing multiple collisions with innocent motorists’ vehicles. The pursuit caused a temporary lockdown at Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School, ensuring the safety of students as the chase unfolded nearby. Eventually, law enforcement used stop sticks to disable the vehicle in Will County, leading to Mixon’s apprehension after a brief foot chase.
Sheriff Mike Downey praised the coordinated effort of the officers and police agencies involved in this “extremely dangerous and volatile situation.” He lamented the commonality of such pursuits and the willingness of suspects to risk civilian lives in attempts to flee law enforcement.
Mixon faces multiple charges, as confirmed by the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department: possession of a stolen motor vehicle, unlawful use of a weapon due to a firearm found in his possession, fleeing/eluding police, in addition to outstanding warrants and several traffic-related offenses. The SUV’s origin from University Park adds a layer of complexity to the chase, highlighting the widespread impact of auto theft. Currently detained at the Jerome Combs Detention Center, Mixon awaits a detention hearing before a Kankakee County Judge to determine if his accused criminal acts warrant continued incarceration.
