DeKalb County, IL – DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning about an ongoing phone scam targeting residents. Scammers are impersonating members of the Sheriff’s Office, using the name of a retired employee, and directing victims to call or text a specific number. These calls include threats and claims that the scammers have personal information, such as the victim’s address.

According to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, some victims were told their calls were being transferred to another officer, who actually works for the City of DeKalb Police Department. Authorities emphasize that neither the Sheriff’s Office nor any law enforcement agency will request payment via gift cards or similar methods for bail or criminal charges.

Residents are urged to hang up immediately if they receive such calls and to report the incident to local law enforcement.
