DuPage County, IL – A wrong-way crash in unincorporated Bensenville has turned fatal after one of the victims succumbed to injuries days after the collision, authorities confirmed.
According to the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 5:04 a.m. Friday, April 17, to a head-on crash on Route 83 between Frontage Road and I-290. Investigators allege that Turrubiates-Andrade was driving a 2002 Buick LeSabre northbound in the southbound lanes when he collided head-on with a vehicle carrying two occupants.
Both victims were transported to a local hospital for treatment. On Sunday, April 19, one of the occupants, identified as Michele Lavorata, died from injuries sustained in the crash. The second occupant’s condition has not been publicly detailed.
Authorities said Turrubiates-Andrade was also taken to a hospital and later released into custody. Following a blood draw, officials allege his blood alcohol concentration was .253, more than three times the legal limit.
DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin called the crash “100% avoidable,” emphasizing the availability of rideshare options and the dangers of impaired driving. Sheriff James Mendrick added that the county maintains “zero tolerance” for DUI offenses, noting the irreversible consequences such incidents can bring.
Turrubiates-Andrade faces charges in connection with the crash and is scheduled to appear in court on May 18, 2026, before Judge Margaret O’Connell.
Authorities remind the public that the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
