Springfield, IL – Campers planning trips to Illinois state parks should prepare for a temporary reservation blackout later this month as the state transitions to a new booking system aimed at improving user experience.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), campsite and shelter reservations will move to an upgraded platform beginning Thursday, May 1. The system, hosted through ExploreMoreIL.com, will feature a more user-friendly interface designed to streamline the reservation process for visitors across the state’s nearly 400 park and historic sites.

To complete the transition, all electronic reservations will be unavailable from Sunday, April 27 through Wednesday, April 30. During that time, neither customers nor park staff will be able to access the system. However, walk-up reservations at campgrounds will still be permitted, depending on availability.

Existing reservations will automatically transfer to the new system, but users must create a new account and password to access their bookings. IDNR advises customers to use the same email address tied to their current reservations to avoid issues during the transition.

One key upgrade includes expanded booking flexibility for picnic shelters. Under the new system, shelters will be available on a rolling 12-month window, replacing the previous model that required users to wait until July 1 to reserve for the following year.

IDNR officials say customers should monitor their email for additional instructions as the launch date approaches. The agency oversees a wide range of natural and recreational resources statewide, including parks, wildlife programs, and conservation efforts.
