PEOTONE, IL – The community has rallied around a family in a Peotone following the death of their son on Sunday.

Early Sunday morning, Alex Cardenas, a recent Peotone High School graduate, was killed in a car accident. Cardenas was a standout athlete, excelling on both wrestling and football squads in Peotone. The young man, known for his kind heart, athleticism, and infectious smile, left an indelible mark on everyone he met.

Two GoFundMe campaigns have been launched to support Alex’s grieving family during this difficult time. The Cardenas family, heartbroken by their loss, started the first fundraiser, aiming to raise funds for Alex’s funeral services. With a goal of $7,000, their initial efforts have garnered an impressive $1,700 in donations as of Wednesday morning.

In a separate campaign organized by Andrea Protti, Alex’s accomplishments in Peotone sports and his unwavering commitment to his family and friends are highlighted. In two days time, the fundraiser has raised $18,992 towards a $20,000 goal to assist with funeral expenses.

Peotone plans to bid farewell to Alex during a funeral mass scheduled for Saturday, September 16, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Saint Paul Catholic Church, located at 511 N Conrad St, Peotone, IL 60468. Following the service, he will be laid to rest at Peotone Cemetery.

The Peotone High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club will host a Candlelight Vigil in memory of Alex later tonight at 6:00 p.m. in front of the Peotone High School main entrance. Students, families, staff are invited to attend.
