Ice Storm Creates Hazardous Travel Conditions, School Disruptions Across Area

BOURBONNAIS, IL – The Midwest is facing significant travel hazards as a wave of freezing rain and drizzle sweeps the region, the National Weather Service in Chicago reports. The inclement weather is expected to continue through the early afternoon, creating icy spots on roads and treacherous driving conditions. A corridor for new ice accumulation of up to 1/10 of an inch with some areas experiencing hazardous travel due to freezing drizzle.

Educational institutions are taking precautions, with Joliet Junior College transitioning to virtual operations for Tuesday, while Kankakee Community College will shut its facilities at 2 p.m. Area schools have canceled after-school and evening activities as well.

Authorities are urging drivers to check road conditions before setting out, accessible at gettingaroundillinois.com for Illinois and 511in.org for Indiana. Commuters are advised to slow down, leave extra travel time, and increase stopping distances.
