Joliet, IL – Amid a steady decline in patronage, the Joliet Park District has decided to place the Splash Station water park on the market. The once-thriving summer destination on Route 6 will be listed with Coldwell Banker Real Estate Group, targeting a sale completion in 2024.
The Board of Commissioners reports that demographic shifts in the area have led to a marked decrease in attendance, resulting in considerable revenue losses over consecutive years. Board President Sue Gulas expressed regret over the necessity of the sale but emphasized the importance of adapting to the community’s changing needs. While the water park has been a cherished venue for local families, the small number of residents it serves can no longer justify the financial shortfall.
With the upcoming sale, the board plans to channel the proceeds into community-centric projects that promise broader appeal and fiscal sustainability. The initiatives to be funded by the sale will be determined based on the final sale price. Splash Station, which opened its doors to the public from 2002 to 2018, is poised for a final farewell as the district looks to reinvest in new opportunities for community engagement and recreation.
