Illinois Driver Killed after Plunging Car into Lake, Yards From Shore

LODA, IL – A man from Loda, Illinois, was killed Saturday morning after his vehicle plunged into Bayles Lake.

According to Iroquois County Sheriff’s Police, it happened around 11:30 a.m. when Stevie A. Chapman, 68, was driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler eastbound on County Road 200 North when he lost control, initially veering into the westbound lane. Despite efforts to correct his course, Chapman’s vehicle went into a ditch, re-entered westbound traffic, and eventually ended up in the lake.

Two passersby attempted a rescue Chapman several yards from shore before emergency responders arrived. Chapman was was taken to Gibson Area Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
