Springfield, IL – Near-freezing temperatures early this morning are creating patchy frost across central Illinois, impacting early travel and sensitive vegetation before a rapid warm-up takes hold through midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, temperatures started near 32°F in many areas Monday morning, with frost reported across rural communities from Peoria to Champaign. Conditions will improve quickly today, with highs climbing into the upper 50s to mid-60s by this afternoon along I-55 and I-72 corridors.

A significant warm-up follows, with highs reaching 76–79°F Tuesday and continuing into the mid to upper 70s Wednesday and Thursday. Breezy conditions are expected Tuesday and Thursday, which could impact travel on open roadways and increase fire spread risk in dry fields.

Rain chances begin to return Tuesday night, with scattered storms possible, but the more impactful system arrives late Thursday night into Friday. Rain chances increase to around 70% Friday, with thunderstorms likely to affect commutes across cities including Springfield, Decatur, and Bloomington.

Residents should protect plants early today, then prepare for rapidly changing conditions through the week. Dry weather dominates midweek before storms return, and additional alerts may be issued as the late-week system approaches.
