SAINT PAUL, MINN. – Illinois has emerged as a clean energy powerhouse, topping the charts in the Midwest.
According to the American Clean Power Association (ACP) Second Quarter 2023 Report, Illinois secured first place among 11 Midwest states for clean power capacity under construction. With 3,035 megawatts (MW) in progress, Illinois is spearheading green energy transformation.
Illinois also claimed the second position for new clean power capacity additions and operational capacity, adding 485 MW in the first half of 2023. The state now boasts a total operational clean power capacity of 8,643 MW, derived from wind, solar, and battery storage.
Wind, solar, and energy storage now contribute 13.8 percent of Illinois’ electricity, enough to power 3.1 million homes. This shift to renewables has created over 18,095 jobs and attracted $17 billion in investments. Wind and solar costs have plummeted, making them the most affordable electricity sources nationally.
Governor J.B. Pritzker’s Climate and Equitable Jobs Act (CEJA) commits Illinois to 100% clean energy by 2050, driving $180 million in annual clean energy workforce investments and doubling renewable development.
