MOMENCE, IL – Late Friday night, an onslaught of six tornados hit Northeastern Illinois, leaving a trail of devastation in their wake. Among the affected areas, Momence suffered severe damage with an F1 tornado traveling 3.4 miles, unleashing winds up to 110mph, causing significant harm to two apartment buildings on Harvard Street and across Route 114.
The Ramirez family, who lived on the lower level of one of the buildings, tragically lost all their belongings due to the building’s collapse.
Remarkably, the Ramirez family is one of the only reported family from all six tornado-stricken areas to be displaced from the storms. As the community comes together to offer support, organizers are striving to raise $5,000 through the GoFundMe campaign “Rebuilding Hope for the Ramirez Family.”
“My friends, The Ramirez family lived on the lower level of where the tornado hit and unfortunately lost all of their belongings due to the building caving in,” Maria Andrade, the campaign organizer, said in the post. “They have (one) daughter in junior high who now needs clothes and shoes plus her school supplies. Any and all donations will 100% go straight to the family for a new place to rent and their basic housing necessities.”
Friday’s storms unleashed six tornadoes traveling across four counties and 10 municipalities, with paths collectively traveled 46.5 miles on the ground.
