Indianapolis, IN – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) has announced a substantial $50 million investment in local road safety projects, aimed at significantly reducing roadway fatalities and serious injuries across the state.
According to INDOT, this funding is part of the Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) and is designed to support a variety of safety improvement initiatives. INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith highlighted the ambitious goal of reducing fatal and serious injury crashes on Indiana roadways by 25% over the next ten years. “This is a goal that we can’t reach on our own,” Smith stated. “It’s going to take all of us, at both the state and local levels, working together, to truly enhance roadway safety.”
The call for project proposals will open on September 3 and close on October 11. Eligible projects include new or updated warning devices, raised medians, curb extensions, pedestrian crosswalk improvements, traffic signal enhancements, and adjustments at rail crossings. Local cities, towns, and counties awarded funding will be required to use the funds within two years.
In addition to funding, INDOT is implementing several statewide safety initiatives, including the “Buckle Up Phone Down” campaign, regional safety summits, and a worksite speed control pilot program. More details are available on the INDOT website.
