Porter County, IN – A fatal crash on Sunday evening on I-94 near the 31.6-mile marker, has been attributed to a speeding SUV merging into a semi-truck, according to the Indiana State Police. The accident occurred approximately five miles east of S.R. 49 around 7:19 p.m., claiming the life of the SUV driver.
The preliminary investigation by the Indiana State Police reveals that the SUV, identified as a 2015 Toyota Rav4, was traveling at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes. For reasons yet to be determined, the SUV abruptly changed lanes, colliding with the semi-truck’s trailer as it was merging back into the right lane from the shoulder.
Trooper Justin Baumeister was among the first on the scene, discovering the severely damaged SUV in the ditch and the semi-truck on the right lane. Despite efforts to provide first aid, the SUV driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. The semi-truck driver was unharmed.
Indiana State Police Crash Reconstruction and the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division are assisting with the ongoing investigation.
