Interstate 57 Tragedy: Chicago Man Arrested for Reckless Homicide After Fatal Crash

Chicago, IL – Illinois State Police have arrested Issac Espejel, a 23-year-old from Chicago, following a deadly crash on Interstate 57. Espejel faces two alleged counts of Aggravated Driving Under the Influence Involving Death and two counts of Reckless Homicide. 

According to investigators the accident happened near the 146th Street exit on April 16, 2024, at approximately 1:47 a.m. Espejel was driving a blue Ford Ecosport at high speed when he lost control and struck a concrete median barrier. The crash resulted in the death of one passenger at the scene and another in the hospital. Espejel sustained minor injuries and was taken into custody.

Following an investigation, the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges against Espejel, who now awaits a detention hearing.
