Iowa Approaches Record-Breaking Year for Tornadoes in 2024

Des Moines, IA – Iowa is nearing its annual tornado record, with a preliminary count of 94 tornadoes reported so far in 2024.

According to the US National Weather Service in Des Moines, this tally includes 45 tornadoes in April, breaking the previous April record of 40 set in 2001, and 48 tornadoes in May. One tornado has been confirmed in June. The state’s record stands at 120 tornadoes set in 2004. Weather officials continue to monitor conditions as storm season progresses.
