Jackson, KY – Drivers and utility crews across eastern Kentucky are on alert as strong storms Saturday could bring wind gusts strong enough to snap limbs and knock out power by the afternoon hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) covers much of eastern Kentucky, with a Slight Risk (Level 2) focused on northeast counties, including areas near Morehead and Ashland. Storm development hinges on daytime heating, but if storms intensify, damaging wind gusts will be the primary hazard.
Communities along the I-64 corridor and northeast Kentucky could see the strongest impacts, with isolated gusts near 60 mph possible in stronger cells. Even outside of thunderstorms, winds could reach 20 to 25 mph from late morning through the afternoon, creating hazardous conditions for high-profile vehicles and loose outdoor items.
Residents are urged to secure patio furniture, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. Downed trees and scattered outages are possible, especially in rural and wooded areas.
Storm chances increase late Saturday morning and continue into the evening, with additional updates expected as conditions evolve.
