Kankakee, IL – The Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office has issued a renewed warning about a persistent phone scam targeting residents by impersonating law enforcement officials. The scam involves callers falsely claiming to be from the sheriff’s office, demanding money over the phone under the pretense of avoiding arrest for missing jury duty. Sheriff Mike Downey emphasizes that the office never solicits payments via phone for any service.

According to the sheriff’s office, these callers often use spoofing technology to make their phone numbers appear legitimate, sometimes even using real names of officers from the department. The public is urged to be vigilant and verify any suspicious calls by directly contacting the Kankakee County communications center at (815) 933-3324, rather than providing any personal information or payment.
