Champaign, Illinois – The University Police at the University of Illinois have issued a community safety notice following a series of trespassing incidents in off-campus apartments. These incidents have left many residents feeling concerned for their safety and prompted the police department to act fast.
According to reports received by the police department, intruders have been entering unlocked apartments, with some residents being inside during the break-ins. In the most recent incident, a single intruder entered five apartments in an apartment building located at 308 E. Green St. between 10:50 p.m. and midnight on Tuesday. The intruder lingered in some of the apartments for several minutes before leaving. The University Police were made aware of the incidents on Wednesday.
In February, an arrest was made in connection with a series of similar incidents at 309 E. Green St. Several other reports of unauthorized access to off-campus apartments have been received by the police department throughout the spring semester.
The University Police are urging students and residents to take precautions to prevent such incidents, including locking all doors and windows at all times, even when they are at home. Additionally, they should not hold the door for strangers or people who do not live in the building, and report suspicious activity to the police immediately.
