KANKAKEE – A Chebanse man was arrested early this morning on DUI charges after violating Scott’s Law and striking a State Trooper’s vehicle.
According to Illinois State Police, it happened at 2:34 a.m. Saturday morning while an officer was investigating a previous crash at Route 45 and 5152 S. Road in Kankakee County. The trooper was outside their vehicle with the driver of the original crash at the time, when another driver of a green Chevrolet Trail Blazer, 24-year-old Austin M. Gray of Chebanse, failed to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle on the scene. Gray proceeded to strike the rear of the State Trooper’s car before coming to a stop.
Both the Trooper and driver standing outside the Trooper’s vehicle at the time sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Gray was charged with Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol, Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle, and a violation of Scott’s Law – Improper Passing of an Emergency Vehicle Causing Injury to Another. Gray’s encounter becomes the 16th violation Scott’s Law in Illinois this year.
A person who violates Scott’s Law can have their license suspended for up to two years and face fines in excess of $10,000 for a first offense.
