CROWN POINT, IN – A woman was arrested over the weekend for operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) after allegedly hitting a pedestrian, another car, and a garage in a hit-and-run incident in Crown Point.
According to Crown Point Police it happened Saturday night just before 9pm when officers were called to the 100 block of Horst Street where witnesses reported a red 2018 Mitsubishi Eclipse Crossover had allegedly driven off the roadway. The vehicle was being driven by 35-year-old Heather Grzelak of Merrillville.
According to witnesses, Grzelak allegedly drove down a dead-end roadway and reversed off the road, hitting a pedestrian who suffered leg pain but was conscious when police arrived. Grzelak also reportedly struck another vehicle and a garage causing minor damages.
Upon police arrival, Grzelak, a nurse at nearby hospital, was found to be the sole occupant of the vehicle and allegedly had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. She denied having consumed alcohol, but failed on-site field sobriety tests. Her blood alcohol content was later found to be 0.170, more than twice the legal limit.
Grzelak was taken into custody without incident and charged with OWI. Charges are pending at the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
