LAKE COUNTY – A young girl was badly injured in a two-vehicle crash on northbound Interstate 65 near Crown Point on Monday afternoon.

The incident occurred after a car abruptly stopped in the middle of the highway, allegedly because it had run out of gas.

The driver behind that car was able to avoid a collision, but a pickup truck following that car did not have enough time to react, hitting the vehicle directly in the back bumper.

According to Indiana State Police, all three individuals involved in the crash, including the drivers of both vehicles and a young girl who was a passenger in the pickup truck, were injured and immediately transported to a nearby hospital in Crown Point.  The girl’s injuries have been described as severe.

The accident is made more concerning by the fact that the driver of the car that stopped in the middle of the highway had been stopped earlier on Monday by Indiana State Police troopers.
