HOBART, Ind. – Officer Brandon Wakeley of the Hobart Police Department prevented a potential suicide attempt on the evening of March 25th, 2023.

According to Hobart Police, while on patrol near Robinson Lake, Officer Wakeley noticed a parked car emitting an abundance of smoke that smelled of burnt marijuana. Upon investigation, he discovered a single occupant, who admitted to being armed and suicidal.

After calmly de-escalating the situation and negotiating with the occupant, Officer Wakeley was able to secure the individual and transport them to a local hospital for treatment. This dangerous situation highlights the importance of de-escalation techniques and the toll they can take on law enforcement officers who frequently encounter similar scenarios.

The Hobart Police Department provides yearly training to their officers on de-escalation techniques to help bring peaceful resolutions to situations like this. Additionally, the city is partnered with the Franciscan Health Employee Assistance Program to provide resources for officers who may need support following traumatic experiences on the job.

This event follows the tragic suicide of a local resident just one week prior, highlighting the severity and frequency of mental health crises in the area. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, the national suicide hotline (988) is available for support, or dial 9-1-1 for immediate assistance.

Other officers were present at the time of the incident.
