HIGHLAND, Ind. – A harrowing high-speed pursuit early this morning saw a stolen vehicle slam into another car and a utility pole, causing widespread power outages in Highland, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Department.

Officials report the chase began around 2 a.m. when an officer identified a stolen 2020 Hyundai Elantra in Gary. The driver, evading police capture, sped through numerous traffic signals before crashing in Highland at Ridge Road and Indianapolis Boulevard. The aftermath left a utility pole snapped in half, and power lines scattered.

The suspect managed to escape even as a K-9 and helicopter scoured the area. The investigation remains ongoing.
