LOWELL – A Griffith woman is being treated for serious life-threatening injuries after her car reportedly struck a parked semi-tractor trailer earlier this morning.

According to Indiana State Police, it happened at 1 am this morning when for an unknown reason, the 2001 Pontiac Grand Am 25-year-old Stephanie K. Sanders was driving left the roadway and struck the rear of the tractor-trailer.

Sanders became trapped in the vehicle and had to be extracted by the Gary Fire Department. Once extracted from the car, Sanders was flown to the University of Chicago for emergency care.

“Evidence at the crash scene led troopers to suspect that alcohol/drugs may have been a factor in this crash.” Indiana State Police said in a release Friday morning.

The incident remains under investigation
