University of Illinois Student Pays Twice in Sexual Extortion Scam

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – A University of Illinois student fell prey to a sexual extortion scam and ended up paying twice. 

According to University of Illinois Police reports, the student was coerced into sending intimate photos to an unknown person who then demanded money, threatening to release the pictures to the student’s social media contacts if payment was not made. 

After the student paid and blocked the number, the photo was posted online, and the student was asked to pay again. When it happened a second time, the student contacted the police. 

In total, the student lost $876. Authorities are warning students to be cautious when sharing personal information online.
