Albuquerque, NM – In a tragic incident on Interstate 40 near mile marker 320, a New Mexico State Police officer, Justin Hare, was fatally shot, sparking an intensive manhunt.
According to New Mexico State Police, the suspect, identified as 32-year-old Jaremy Smith from Marion, South Carolina, is on the run and deemed extremely dangerous. Last observed on foot along the I-40 Frontage Road between Montoya and Newkirk, Smith was wearing a brown hoodie and jacket. Charged with First Degree Murder among other serious crimes, authorities caution the public against approaching him.
Following the devastating event, a convoy led by the New Mexico State Police and joined by agencies across the state, solemnly transported Officer Hare’s remains to Albuquerque. This gesture of respect and mourning highlights the deep loss felt by the law enforcement community, as well as by Officer Hare’s family and friends.
A press briefing is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Albuquerque State Police Office, aiming to share further details and updates on the manhunt.
