WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Illinois – After nearly a decade in limbo, a once-misplaced tombstone has been returned to its rightful place at Rose Hill Cemetery.

Originally found at a Pittsburg residence in 2014 by a new homeowner, the tombstone’s past remained a mystery, residing in the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office evidence room. But with persistent sleuthing, the investigators cracked the case.

In a joint effort with the Williamson County Historical Society and Rose Hill Cemetery staff, the sheriff’s office successfully identified the tombstone’s original location. While the entire tale behind this discovery might remain untold, one thing is certain: the tombstone is home at last.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with details about this or related investigations to reach out at 618.997.6541 or through Williamson County Crime Stoppers at 800.414.TIPS (8477). All tipsters can opt to remain anonymous.
