Elizabeth City, North Carolina – Severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes could impact northeastern North Carolina through Monday evening, placing nine counties near the Albemarle Sound under a Tornado Watch until 7 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 67 includes Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Hertford, Northampton, Pasquotank, and Perquimans counties. Storms moving northeast across eastern North Carolina may strengthen as they approach the Albemarle Sound and Outer Banks gateway communities.
Elizabeth City, Edenton, Hertford, and Windsor could see damaging wind gusts over 60 mph, intense lightning, and brief tornado development during the afternoon hours. Heavy rainfall may also reduce visibility along key routes including U.S. 17, U.S. 158, and N.C. Highway 37.
Communities along the Virginia border, including Currituck and Gates counties, sit near the northern edge of the watch area where storms may intensify while moving toward coastal waters. Emergency managers advise residents to keep mobile alerts enabled and be ready to move to a sturdy interior room if a tornado warning is issued.
Boaters on the Albemarle Sound should monitor weather conditions closely as storms approach from the west.
The tornado watch remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday, and additional warnings may be issued quickly if rotating thunderstorms develop across northeastern North Carolina.
