Officer Injured as Three Hospitalized After Five-Vehicle Crash in Gary

GARY, IN – A reckless driving incident on the morning of April 3, 2024, led to a five-vehicle collision on 5th Ave in Gary, IN, resulting in the hospitalization of three individuals. 

According to a press release from the Gary Police Department, a white SUV was reported for erratic driving before it crossed the median and collided head-on with a westbound police SUV, triggering a chain reaction with three additional vehicles, including a semi-truck. 

Among those involved was Gary Police Department Commander Dawn Westerfield, who is in stable condition and undergoing further tests in a Chicago area hospital. The Lake County Police Department and Gary Police Department CSI are investigating the scene. The police department expressed gratitude for the community’s support following the incident.
