Columbia, SC – Dry conditions continue to intensify across central South Carolina this week, worsening drought impacts on agriculture and water resources through at least Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, much of the region is now under moderate to severe drought conditions, with some areas nearing extreme levels. Counties across the Midlands, including Richland, Lexington, Sumter, and Orangeburg, are seeing prolonged dryness with little meaningful rainfall in recent days.

Daytime conditions through Friday remain largely dry, limiting any immediate relief. Soil moisture levels continue to drop, increasing stress on crops and raising concerns for wildfire potential in rural areas. Residents may also notice declining water levels in smaller ponds and creeks.

A shift in the weather pattern is expected beginning this weekend, with increasing chances for rainfall. The Climate Prediction Center indicates above-normal precipitation probabilities across the Southeast between Saturday and early next week, offering potential drought relief if totals are sufficient.

Residents are encouraged to conserve water where possible and monitor local burn restrictions as dry conditions persist. More detailed rainfall timing and totals will become clearer later this week, with updates expected as the system approaches.
