Teenage Girl Fatally Shot, 16-Year-Old Suspect on Parole in Custody in Mount Vernon

Mount Vernon, IL – A teenage girl lost her life in a shooting incident in Mount Vernon on Saturday afternoon, around 4:11 pm. 

According to the Mt Vernon Police Department, the tragedy occurred in the 1800 block of Lamar, where officers, responding to an alarming 911 call, discovered a 17-year-old girl had been shot. At the scene, a 16-year-old male was found allegedly holding a handgun and was taken into custody. Emergency personnel from the Mt Vernon Fire Department and Litton’s Ambulance Service rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, the victim was later pronounced deceased at a local hospital. Her identity has not been disclosed.

The 16-year-old suspect, previously involved in criminal activities and on parole at the time of the incident, now faces preliminary charges including Armed Violence / Discharge a Firearm, Aggravated Battery with a Firearm, Involuntary Manslaughter, and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by Person Under 18.
