New Baden, IL – Three EF-1 tornadoes touched down in parts of Clinton and Marion counties on Sunday evening, causing extensive damage but no reported injuries.
According to the US National Weather Service St. Louis, the tornadoes were confirmed near New Baden, Carlyle Lake, and Forbes Lake, uprooting trees and damaging structures. The first tornado struck just southwest of New Baden at approximately 6:34 p.m., traveling through Damiansville. It caused damage to large trees, a commercial garage roof, and minor roof damage before dissipating at 6:44 p.m. This tornado had winds of 90 mph and a path length of 10.5 miles.
The second tornado touched down north of Carlyle Lake at 6:50 p.m., causing significant damage to a garage and shed, and removing parts of a roof from at least one home. It also broke large branches and downed power lines before lifting at 7:01 p.m. This tornado had winds reaching 97 mph and a path length of 11.3 miles.
The third event consisted of two tornadoes near Forbes Lake, beginning at 7:28 p.m. and 7:29 p.m. respectively, primarily uprooting and snapping trees. One tornado traveled 1.1 miles with winds of 104 mph, while the other continued into Clay County before lifting.
Despite the destruction, no fatalities or injuries were reported. Authorities urge residents to remain vigilant as clean-up efforts begin.
