Urbana, IL – Police have made a significant arrest in a series of over 70 vehicle burglaries that have rattled southeastern Urbana since mid-December 2023.

Tyrese Ford, 21, of Urbana, was apprehended on January 11, 2024, following a thorough investigation by local authorities. According to the police, Ford was arrested at the intersection of Timothy Trail Drive and Washington Street in Urbana. This development came after Ford was allegedly identified using stolen credit cards at an Urbana Walmart. A subsequent search of Ford’s residence yielded alleged stolen property, connecting him to numerous vehicle break-ins.

Charged with one count of Burglary, three counts of vehicle burglary, and unlawful possession of firearm ammunition. The Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office has also filed a petition to detain Ford and revoke his release on a separate pending case.

The Urbana Police Department continues its investigation into the series of thefts and urges the public to take preventive measures to secure their vehicles. They also encourage residents with any additional information or video footage to contact them or submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers.
