Watseka, IL – Watseka Police Department is alerting residents to a new scam targeting those seeking rent-to-own property deals. In a recent incident, a resident found a property listed on Facebook Marketplace as rent-to-own, and contacted the supposed owner, a stocky male of unknown descent.

According to police, a resident met with the man at a vacant residence in Watseka, where he showed them the property, asking for $300 in Walmart gift cards as payment. The resident later discovered the property was unoccupied and owned by someone else.

Police urge caution when giving out personal information or payment in gift cards, and to report similar incidents to the Watseka Police Department.
