Whites City, New Mexico – A magnitude 3.0 earthquake struck southern New Mexico late Monday morning, with light shaking possible along key routes near Carlsbad and Whites City within minutes of the tremor.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake hit at 11:38 a.m. MDT Monday about 60 kilometers south of Whites City at a depth of 6.4 kilometers. The event has been reviewed and registered through regional seismic networks, including TexNet, with no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The epicenter places the shaking near sparsely populated areas, but drivers along U.S. Highway 62/180 between Carlsbad and the Texas state line may have felt brief vibrations. Eddy County officials have not issued any closures, though minor ground movement can occasionally dislodge loose rocks along rural streets.
Residents in Carlsbad, Whites City, and nearby oilfield operations may notice slight rumbling, especially in low-rise buildings. Officials recommend checking for unsecured items and reporting any structural concerns, even after minor quakes.
While a magnitude 3.0 event typically causes little to no damage, it serves as a reminder of ongoing seismic activity in the region tied to both natural and induced factors.
Monitoring continues through Monday evening, and additional updates will be issued if aftershocks or stronger activity develops.
