Whiting, IN – The BP Whiting Refinery experienced a significant power outage, leading to emergency measures and disruptions in the area.

According to updates, the outage has necessitated the flaring of smoke stacks as a safety procedure to burn off excess product. This has resulted in visible smoke headers, prompting a response from local authorities.

In response to the situation, the refinery initiated an evacuation of its employees, particularly from the Glass House located at Indianapolis Boulevard and 129th Street.

Police have closed Indianapolis Boulevard from 129th to Schrage to all traffic, advising the public to use Calumet Avenue for north or south travel. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is reportedly on site to monitor the situation.
