Will County, IL – A domestic dispute in Crete Township escalated to violence early Tuesday morning, February 27, 2024, when a man was shot in the stomach by his girlfriend. The incident, reported to the Will County Sheriff’s Office around 12:15 AM, occurred in the 25000 Block of Nancy Street. The victim, attempting to end the relationship, was critically injured in the altercation.
Responding deputies located the assailant, 47-year-old Tawanda Canady of Crete, inside the residence and took her into custody without incident. The 41-year-old victim received immediate first aid from deputies before being transported to a local hospital in critical condition; he was later transferred to a Chicago area hospital for surgery.
The ongoing investigation has kept the scene active, with authorities working to gather more evidence. Tawanda Canady faces multiple charges, including Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Aggravated Domestic Battery. She is currently held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility awaiting her detention hearing.
