Chicago, IL – When was the last time you celebrated with a high five?

On National High Five Day, let’s reflect on this universally beloved gesture, etched into the annals of sports history by none other than Dusty Baker. Like a seasoned player rounding the bases, Baker has touched many pivotal cities—Los Angeles, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Houston—throughout his illustrious career as both a World Series champion as both player and a manager.

Perhaps the most underrated contribution Baker has brought to sports occurred in 1977, in the warmth of Dodger Stadium.  Baker not only clinched a pivotal home run but also, alongside Glenn Burke, spontaneously created the high five. This simple act of slapping palms has since become a symbolic celebration of success and solidarity across sports and cultures.

Dusty Baker’s journey through America’s baseball diamonds mirrors his pioneering of the high five—spreading enthusiasm and unity in every city he’s graced. From the windy fields of Chicago to the historic pitches of Washington and the vibrant arenas of Houston, Baker’s legacy flourishes.

Today, as we embrace National High Five Day, we celebrate more than a gesture; we honor a tradition that Baker helped immortalize. It’s a tribute to his enduring impact on baseball and beyond—his high fives have indeed been like home runs, memorable and momentous. So, wherever you are, share a high five today; it’s a small tribute to a grand tradition that connects us all in joy and camaraderie.
