Juneteenth 2023: Celebrate Freedom and Art at theNate’s Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park

University Park, IL – Mark your calendars for Saturday, June 17, 2023, as the vibrant Juneteenth celebrations come alive at theNate’s Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park. 

Rain or shine, this highly anticipated event promises an unforgettable experience for all attendees. Located at 1 University Parkway, University Park, IL 60484, the park will open its gates at the F Wing Entrance, where guests will be greeted by the captivating “French Fries” sculpture. Restrooms will be conveniently available inside.

Bring your own picnic dinner, excluding grilling equipment, and prepare to relax on the grass with your lawn chair or blanket. Don’t forget to bring essential items such as a water bottle, sun-screen, hat, picnic gear, an umbrella for shade, layered clothing, and comfortable walking shoes to navigate the park’s scenic paths.

Starting at 5 PM, the Southland Arts program will kick off the festivities, featuring soul-stirring performances by the Acme Missionary Baptist Church Gospel Choir and captivating spoken word artist Jataun Rollins. The GSU Dance Ensemble will also grace the stage, showcasing their mesmerizing talent.

At 6:30 PM, Governors State University will host the enchanting “Cuz’n” Jazz Band, accompanied by Andrea Billups, providing an evening of melodic jazz. Jataun Rollins will return with her compelling spoken word performance, captivating the audience.

As the night deepens, Park Forest will come alive with the sounds of Mwata Bowden and the Sunrise Ensemble, offering a sunset stroll accompanied by acoustic jazz starting at 7:30 PM. To sweeten the experience, indulge in delectable treats from Zarlengo’s.

This free event encourages attendees to bring their own picnic dinner and immerse themselves in the rich cultural celebration of Juneteenth.
