Rantoul Man arrested after Drag Race leads to Fatal Crash

CHAMPAIGN – Illinois State Police have arrested a Rantoul Man in connection with a fatal crash in early June in Champaign County.

Justin T. Shields, 21 of Rantoul, was taken into custody for Leaving the Scene of an Accident Involving a Death and Aggravated Street Racing on June 12th.  

Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigations found a single vehicle crash on US Route 136 at Champaign County Road 2376E on June 12th involved a second vehicle leading up to the wreck that claimed the life of 34-year-old Scott A. Boyne.

“Agents determined Boyne and another vehicle had been drag racing on US Route 136 prior to the crash.  During the drag race, the secondary vehicle contacted Boyne’s vehicle causing Boyne’s vehicle to leave the roadway.  Shields was identified as the driver of the second vehicle.” Illinois State Police reported Wednesday afternoon.

A warrant was issued for Shields arrest on August 2nd in by Champaign County State’s Attorney’s Office.  Shields is being held on $10,000 bond.
