Shapiro COVID-19 cases rise over 100, 32% of all residents tested in Kankakee

Over 30% of all Shapiro Developmental Center residents have now had COVID-19 tests.

As of Friday, April 17th, Shapiro Developmental Center Director Lynne Gund announced 155 of the Center’s 477 residents had been given a COVID-19 test.  Of the number, given to date by the Center, 59 have come back positive for COVID-19. 

An additional 44 employees have tested positive for the Virus, resulting in over 100 cases to date tied to Shapiro. Two of those employees have since made a recovery and returned to work.

On April 10th Governor Pritzker announced Shapiro would be one of three Developmental Centers in Illinois to receive their own Abbott ID Now testing machine, allowing for results internally within as little as five  minutes. 

On Wednesday it was announced the National Guard would be arriving on Shapiro’s campus to assist in employee temperature screenings across the campus of the facility.
