Facebook will now alert you before sharing old news

Facebook announced last week it will begin to provide extended context on content shared through the site, including alerting users when they share articles older than 3 months old.

Users can still share the information if they so choose.

“News publishers in particular have expressed concerns about older stories being shared on social media as current news, which can misconstrue the state of current events,” said Vice President of News Feed and Stories, John Hegeman in a post.  “Some news publishers have already taken steps to address this on their own websites by predominantly labeling older articles to prevent outdated news from being used in misleading ways.”

Additional roll-outs to news articles will feature additional context such as what friends like the website you are consuming and links to other additional information.
