OAK BROOK, IL – A couple was charged for allegedly using their children to steal over $950 of goods from Oak Brook’s Macy’s.

According to Oak Brook police, Angelo Almaraz, 26, and Thalia Morales, 32, led their family into the store on November 27, 2023, where their eldest children allegedly helped select and conceal items. The attempted escape was thwarted by vigilant loss prevention officers and local officers. Facing serious burglary and retail theft charges, the couple was released pending a December 26 court date.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin condemned the adult’s exploitation of minors in the theft, stressing DuPage’s zero-tolerance stance on retail crime. Deputy Chief Reid Foltyniewicz echoed these sentiments, highlighting the community’s united front against such acts. The ongoing investigation may lead to additional charges, and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services is involved. The accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
