Joliet, IL – A routine visit to a Joliet DMV turned confrontational on Wednesday, when 21-year-old Aareon Newell of Coal City allegedly threatened staff and physically assaulted a police officer following a dispute over his identification.
According to Joliet police reports the incident occurred at the Illinois Secretary of State driver’s license facility on 201 Joyce Road at approximately 5:14 p.m. Newell became increasingly irate after a disagreement with DMV employees about his ID card, culminating in the alleged threats and the use of profanity. When approached by an officer, Newell reportedly refused to exit the building, leading to a physical altercation. Despite being taken to the ground, Newell continued to resist, allegedly striking and kicking the officer.
Additional officers were called to the scene, and Newell was eventually subdued and arrested. He was charged with aggravated battery to a peace officer, resisting a peace officer, and disorderly conduct. Following a medical evaluation at Ascension St Joseph Medical Center, Newell was processed at the Joliet Police Department and released on a Notice to Appear.
