Peoria, IL – In the early hours of Sunday, police observed a vehicle speeding through the intersection of Hamilton and NE Perry Avenue.

Opting not to pursue due to the vehicle’s high speed, the situation escalated minutes later when officers were called to the 100 block of SW Monroe Street following a report of a hit and run. The incident involved the previously spotted speeding vehicle, which struck an adult male pedestrian, leaving him seriously injured but stable after being rushed to a local hospital.

Through the use of a License Plate Reader (LPR), law enforcement located the suspect vehicle in the 3100 block of W. Manchester. The driver, identified as 36-year-old Derek M. Dawson, was apprehended shortly after and faces multiple charges, including DUI and failing to render aid. Dawson is currently held at Peoria County Jail pending further legal proceedings.

Police urge anyone with information about the incident to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
