Kankakee, IL – An early morning shooting in Kankakee Wednesday escalated into a cross-county pursuit, ending with the arrest of a felon on Route 17.

According to the Kankakee Police Department, the incident began around 8:59 a.m. in the 500 block of S. Harrison Ave, where officers responding to gunfire reports found several shell casings and a damaged silver sedan linked to the shooting. A 33-year-old Black male, suffering from gunshot wounds, was discovered nearby and rushed to the hospital. The alleged suspect, identified as Demetrius B. Lee, 33, from Kankakee, reportedly fled the scene in a black GMC Terrain.

A multi-agency operation involving Illinois State Police, Kankakee County Sheriff’s Department, and local police departments from Bradley, Bourbonnais, and Momence, engaged in a high-speed chase through the county. The pursuit, which looped back to Kankakee on Route 17, resulted in Lee’s apprehension without further incidents.

Lee, now in custody, faces multiple charges, including Aggravated Battery with a Firearm and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon. A multi-agency investigation into the incident is ongoing.
