Indiana Toddler in Critical Condition After Being Pulled from River by Family, Bystanders

Elkhart, IN – A two-year-old boy is in critical condition after being carried off by the St. Joseph River early Wednesday afternoon.

According to the Elkhart Police Department, the incident occurred around 12:09 p.m. when the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a call about a child in the river off Edgewater Blvd. Family members tried to rescue the boy, who was swept west down the river. A bystander eventually pulled the child out near the Edgewater Park boat ramp.

The unidentified child was later transferred to Memorial Hospital for further treatment. The child’s father also sustained a minor injury during the rescue and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
