Monticello, IN – An Indiana shop was nearly conned when a man posing as a credit card service representative convinced them to swap their card reader machine.

The scam unfolded in Monticello, where the impostor claimed his company had taken over the shop’s existing card service provider and needed to replace their equipment. The shop owner grew suspicious and contacted their actual service provider, who confirmed no changes were authorized and advised them to disconnect the fraudulent device immediately.

According to the Monticello Police Department, the quick thinking of the shop owner prevented what could have been a significant financial loss. Local authorities are now alerting other businesses to verify the identity of any individuals claiming to represent service companies before allowing access to sensitive equipment.
