CHESTERTON, IN – A late Thursday afternoon took a dramatic turn when a 27-year-old Portage resident lost control of her fiancé’s truck on Broadway.

According to Chesterton Police the vehicle scraped a NIPSCO pole, crashed into a building located at the intersection of Broadway and South 14th Street. The driver at the time had just left the Mortgage Inn, admitted to authorities that she was “unable to stop” the truck, which she found more challenging than her own vehicle. The truck eventually found partially inside the building at 1315 Broadway.

Chesterton Police Chief Tim Richardson stated that despite her claims of consuming only two beers an hour before the accident, her blood alcohol content, measured at Northwest Health-Porter, alarmingly exceeded the legal limit.  An OWI charge is currently pending test results.
